Labour Party Conference fringe meeting

LMIU fringe meeting at Labour Party conference, ‘Ireland 2030. Let the People Vote’, continues the rolling launch of our latest campaign.

Some sections of the British Press acknowledged the significance of the Celtic leaders summit in Cardiff last week, though many did not, and few mention the ongoing Irish Unity conversations in Ireland. But decision makers in the governments on either side of the Irish Sea know the significance of this growing movement.

British PM, Andy Burham and Irish Taoiseach, Micheal Martin also met last week and when asked if they’d discussed a Border Poll, Martin said “We discussed a wide range of issues and I don’t think, at this stage, that the British government is at that position. There was a broad discussion in terms of the Good Friday agreement, and I am leaving it at that.”

Rather than ‘leaving it at that’ the two governments now need to take the next steps and start serious preparations. A new book, ‘Before the Vote: Planning for a United Ireland’ by Professor John Doyle, points the way (free download at https://dcupress.dcu.ie/book/before-the-vote/ ).

The demand for self-determination for the Irish people is gaining momentum and we need to continue to grow the campaign here in Britain.
