Welcome opportunity to bring the Irish unity debate to the North West of England

Sinn Féin TD Rose Conway-Walsh has strongly welcomed the opportunity to engage with the Irish diaspora and advocates for Irish unity in the North West of England on Friday evening.

The Mayo TD was speaking after a public meeting, in Salford, hosted by the ‘Labour Movement for Irish Unity’, where she participated in a panel discussion alongside local British Labour Party MP Rebecca Long-Bailey and veteran political activist and historian Geoff Bell.

Reflecting on the event, Ms Conway-Walsh stated: “It was fantastic to meet with members of the Irish community and progressive allies in Manchester and Salford who share our vision for a new, united Ireland. Sinn Féin has always been mindful of the considerable, untapped potential that our diaspora possesses to drive the campaign for constitutional change forward.

Highlighting the vital role that the Irish abroad must play in the campaign for constitutional change, Conway-Walsh continued, “I would like to commend the organisers of the meeting for bringing such a timely discussion together. While the primary impetus for unification must come from Ireland itself, there is a vital parallel role in Britain for those who advocate for change.”

Conway-Walsh concluded, “As someone who was once part of the diaspora, I recognise the importance of ensuring that those who leave retain a stake in the place they will always call home. That is why we must proactively harness the unique skills, energy, and global outlook of this confident, modern generation of Irish emigrants. Let us build a better, fairer and united Ireland for them to come home to.”
