Ireland 2030 - Let the people vote
Our recent AGM agreed to start a campaign, Ireland 2030 - Let the people vote.
The campaign reflects the call in Ireland by civic groups, campaigns and political parties for a Border Poll on the reunification of Ireland, under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) by the end of this decade.
Contrary to the outgoing British Prime Minister and his Secretary of State’s claim that no one is discussing Irish Unity, the reality is that it is an everyday topic of conversation in Ireland - across all communities in the north – and in the Irish parliament.
Almost exactly two years ago a report from the all party Oireachtas ‘Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement’ stated “Our report examines the cost of a potential united Ireland and makes the case for planning and preparation for a united Ireland to begin.” See reference below.
Sinn Fein last month introduced a Bill to the Irish Parliament, ‘Planning for constitutional change’ to compel the Dublin Government to begin structured, formal planning for Irish reunification. Calling for a Green Paper within 12 months and establishing a Citizens’ Assembly six months later. The second reading is on 7th July 2026.
The Irish centre right party, Fine Gael, recently announced it will present a Blueprint for Irish Unity to its Ard Fheis (conference) in November.
Last week SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party) held a conference in Belfast, ‘The Future of these Islands: preparing for change’, with a broad range of speakers including the Irish Justice Minister, leaders from nationalist parties in Scotland and Wales, former Irish Taoiseach, and Unionists.
These developments together represent a significant step forward and put planning for a United Ireland at the top of the agenda.
We will be launching our campaign in the autumn with a series of meetings, the first at the TUC conference in Brighton on 14th September, and then at Labour Party conference fringe on 28th September. These will be followed by meetings in London and the north of England in October and November.
Campaign. Demand. Support.
